Peter Bale - curated media and journalism news - BuzzFeed IPO, Cuomo and more
The company plans to continue acquiring and scaling companies.
Remarkable turnaround for BuzzFeed after cuts a couple of years ago. It's US investigative arm remains first class but it's hard to reconcile that with the percentage of entertainment and nonsense elsewhere. Interesting to see others going down the SPAC route, especially smarties at Vox. I assume the purchase of Politico has raised valuations overall.
More in the ongoing saga of Australia essentially doing what Rupert Murdoch wants to try to contain the power of the tech companies that threaten his pre-eminence in all sorts of ways. He once told me that the Google founders had "unlimited ambition and unlimited capital".
Overdue in my view but CNN just couldn't ignore the latest appalling batch of documents showing one of its main news presenters (who I admit to having always thought was a bit of a pompous, bloviating, dick) was going beyond the call of duty to defend his dodgy politician brother. There's a fabulous quote in a Wall Street Journal story today when a CNN spokesman was asked for a comment on their statement: "a comment on his comment about his comment". I think I know who said that. Very funny.
"I would talk to other journalists to hear what they had heard," Cuomo told investigators.
Ben may be being a little uncharitable here but it is undoubtedly true that a fascinating and often brilliant group of academics have turned the study and exposure of misinformation and disinformation into an industry.
Mathew takes a slightly different view.
One of the finest interviews you may ever see. Hugely experienced BBC correspondent Steve Rosenberg draws the president of Belarus out and allows him to nail himself with his own words.
