NEW YORK (AP) — One of the more striking pieces of journalism from the Ukraine war featured intercepted radio transmissions from Russian soldiers indicating an invasion in disarray, their conversations even interrupted by a hacker literally whistling “Dixie.”
Timely assessment of the state of the art of OSINT -- open source intelligence -- which several news organisations are increasingly good at and investing in. I admit to worrying that the real-time nature and accuracy of this and its inevitable use in investigating war crimes may lead to greater risks for reporters and news organisations. Modern commercial satellites and other assets mean these crimes are caught, evidence gathered, and reported almost immediately. It was the preserve of groups like Bellingcat and Storyful but is now widespread and much of it is excellent. See below:
With more than 200 videos dating back to the start of the war in Ukraine, The Post has created a centralized record of primary source footage, building on its work to help people access and navigate quality news when turning to video online.
The New York Times is looking to add to its list of 132 Pulitzer Prizes — by far the most of any news organization — when the 2022 recipients for journalism are announced on Monday.
Duranty was a rotter and it is clear, to me at least, that his work in the Soviet Union should be acknowledged and the Pulitzer renounced. He was portrayed in the not-too-bad movie about the courageous Welsh journalist Gareth Jones "Mr Jones". It is hard not to see some of the Fox News presenters who act as apologists for Putin in the same light as Duranty.
Vice is considering selling itself outright or in pieces after failing to go public last year, sources say.
What a ride for Vice from the high-octane blather of Shane and his eccentric crew to multi-billion dollar valuations and now having to probably chop themselves up for sale.
Chris Licht wasn't supposed to start his new job as CNN's chief until May. But on Thursday he found himself addressing about 400 full-time CNN+ staffers, some in person and some through a remote video feed.
More or less the best reporting I could find on this saga. My take, for what it is worth, is that the product was ill-conceived despite the passion. Is more intimate CNN the answer to what people want from CNN? I am not so sure. I actually wonder if a less presenter-led, less egotistical, straighter approach might be appreciated worldwide. I admit I could be wrong.
Seen as the future of CNN, the streaming channel was suddenly killed. Its soon-to-be owner, Discovery, had concerns but until the deal closed, it was constrained in guiding a competitor. David Zaslav had been chief executive of Warner Bros.
CNN hyped its streaming service for months, making a big deal out of every splashy hire. But just three weeks after its launch, it’s done. Plus, a multi-year bureaucratic backlog is holding up big renewable projects, how states rank on energy use and energy costs, and more.
The Guardian has issued new social media guidelines warning that staff who engage in public slanging matches with each other on Twitter could face disciplinary action.
Sensible but it does seem to me that Owen, whom I find utterly unreadable, does tend to go for the jugular on social, especially against some of the veteran reporters and feminists who find it difficult to accept his perspective on the rights of trans people.
Twitter was taking up too much of journalists’ time, the Times said. It was also driving harassment and abuse, and bad tweets harm the reputation of the paper and of its staffers. The company also made it clear that Twitter is truly optional, and that using it isn’t a job requirement.
North’s business leader says privatisation plan could be open to legal challenges
The News Media Alliance and MPA – The Association of Magazine Media will merge, gaining bargaining power with platform companies.
The journalist John Sweeney has been on Vladimir Putin's case for 22 years since he first saw evidence of war crimes by the Russian army under Putin's command in Chechnya. John first called Vladimir Putin a war criminal in March 2000. And again and again he's seen evidence of Vladimir Putin killing…
I thoroughly recommend this hard-hitting podcast by John Sweeney. It's brutal and ties together decades of murders, lies, military adventures, and theft by Vladimir Putin and his regime.
