Gratifying to see this done. It's also amazing how many are still there and that there are several excellent western reporters there too. I suspect that in the future Al Jazeera will be the most important way to know what's happening in Afghanistan and it may not always be perfect.
A bit of an alternative perspective. Western governments, aid agencies and media groups have invested heavily in developing Afghan journalism. I assume some of this may be moved out of the country and try to report from abroad but that will be a small percentage.
The coverage, in many places, was all too predictable.
Hot takes are hard to avoid but it shouldn't be impossible to at least add historical context in a story this important that has lasted this long.
This would be a tragedy for freedom of expression in media in the US. The effective shield from libel combines with a very straight approach to journalism to mean that much reporting is accurate and forensic.
Globe & Mail has developed something extremely clever and done the really difficult thing which is turning it into a product it can sell.
