This has been tried a couple of times but this time it may work with the end of the old-fashioned struggle between the NYT parent and the old Paris-based Herald Tribune. The NYT seems to be doing everything right from product strategy through to execution and editorial development.
Having run a US non-profit funded in a sense by some of these people, this is a really interesting step as I suspect if it were a non-profit it would run afoul of US tax laws on philanthropy if it is avowedly "progressive". I admire the commitment Soros has made for many years to journalism.
Much has already been written on these leaks and reports. It is pretty devastating for Facebook to have so much of its dirty washing exposed in this way. However, it is also the case that several of the stories -- such as Facebook allowing elected politicians greater latitude in what they say -- are old news. I actually was involved a little in that decision and agree with it because I don't think Facebook should be regulating politicians' speech. On the other hand, the commitment to growth in engagement above everything is clearly having a big impact on morale -- and the world.
Not sure this is actually the case but it's a valid argument. Full disclosure: I am on the board of The Signals Network which is one of the whistleblower-support groups that is giving some assistance to this leaker, at least on her visit to Europe. It is not the primary supporter. I also find it fascinating that Haughen has had so much professional backing from Pierre Omidyar.
Similar take from the terrific John Naughton. I think Facebook does listen and does want to do the "right thing" but that includes growth and also its deep commitment to a libertarian -- Randian view -- of free speech.
Quite the reveal in the NYTimes by Ben. The editor is gone, as he should be. The most outrageous item to me was faking a divorce agreement in order to presumably convince a potential lover at work.
Great step to try to get decent reporting into this damaged and amazing city. It remains a pity that the investor couldn't get the Baltimore Sun.
Fascinating story on being targeted with NSO's Pegasus software, and below the report of the actual investigation into the case. It is clear that state actors have abused the supposed and evidently ineffective limits on the US of the NSO software. I admit I was quite shocked to read recently that Cherie Blair advises NSO on human rights compliance. Oh yes.
Coda Story does great work on misinformation and disinformation and the state actors that promote it and exploit it most effectively.
A summary of Aotearoa's top anti-vax & conspiracy theory nitwits
A sort of sidebar from New Zealand where this person, a filmmaker, does a better job than much of the national media, in exposing the craziness of the anti-vaxx movement and its ties to evangelical "churches".
The network is poisoning the minds of millions of Americans.
Hard not to agree with this. What I often find perplexing about the behaviour of Fox and some other publications such as The Express in the UK, is that their reporting is so often against the interests of their readers.
