Peter Bale - curated media, journalism, and related tech news - Issue #74
I've had some dealings with Carole and she is incredibly hard-working and honest. She grabs stories and will not let go. Is it possible she went too hard in her comments, the earlier judge certainly thought so. However, there was a clear public interest defence though she should probably never have had to make that defence. It was a very personal attack on her.
I have some awareness of this and it seems right based on what I know: Facebook is exhausted with trying to support the news industry and still getting kicked and held hostage with attempts to force it to pay extortionate sums to news providers. They want it both ways and Facebook no longer wants to play that game. Google is still backing news and seems prepared to pay a set of multi-level taxes to do so.
Mark Little and Aíne Kerr are such thoughtful and effective people in the technology and free speech area. Great to see them involved in this.
How interesting. Chartbeat has always needed careful handling and a good understanding of what it is you want to do it. It can be a very blunt tool but I reckon it can be used in a more nuanced way. It will be interesting to see how well it works in a media environment tuned to subscriptions.
Appeal likely after Priti Patel gives green light to extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder
Depressingly inevitable. He is a difficult customer but he did not leak secrets: he was given secrets which he then published which is where it becomes an act of journalism. To extradite him leaves no future journalist safe. It is also a disgrace that Australia abandoned him.
Noted commentator, tech reporter will host a new companion podcast to ‘Pivot.’
I bloody love Kara and know her a little. I also quite like (in small doses) her smartypants podcast with Scott Gallagher. What I really like is her understanding of her own value which is pretty much based on good journalism, excellent interviewing skills, and a fair but firm approach.
The original story in the Mail stands as one of the silliest pieces of nonsense ever. The Mail's own SEO team would have laughed.
Not a new story but I agree with this approach. The shrill commentators and presenters whose views are clear have weakened the network's ability to call things as they are and to be taken seriously. I believe the international network of CNN has been tainted by the extra level of US content and the way it as engaged in controversy for the sake of it.
For what it's worth, a little bonus from my weekly bulletin for the New Zealand site, The Spinoff.
