Jodie is a total professional and an excellent advocate for journalism and the core values of the craft and the people who do it. She did a terrific job at Index on Censorship and by all accounts at Internews.
WIRED’s ‘On Background’ Policy
Rather a pompous way to put all this but it is smart to make it clear and transparent. PR people are often to naive or unclear about the basis on which they speak and are prone to changing the basis for conversations.
Nic Newman's annual look ahead is usually one of the best in the industry. While it is alarming to see "pivot to video" raising its snout again, he's referring to the influence of Twitch and TikTok which makes some sense. NYT deal on The Athletic and much else suggests he's right on consolidation and acquisitions as well as some likely startups. I agree that we may soon face subscription fatigue and some will face a crunch.
Personally, I am not keen on Piers and his schtick or the work he did at CNN but good on him being on top of the news-as-entertainment-train I guess. Friends who know and have worked with him admire him.
Given my own failure initially to understand how big podcasts were going to be I found this interesting. Perhaps it is related to simply habit and the ongoing difficulty in discovering good new material.
Andrew Jennings brought down the president of not one global sports governing body, but two.
Great obituary on an impactful investigative journalist. The question to Blatter is a classic of the "have you stopped beating your wife" sort.
I fear the judge is taking what she said very literally and it may not end well.
Russian oligarch ends his case against journalist Catherine Belton over her book Putin’s People
A better end to an outrageous attempt to shut down an excellent book. The author and her publisher have been deliberately intimidated by what very much seemed to be a coordinated attack by oligarchs and their agents.
Interesting that this place did a sort of flip to quality.
Interesting take on The Athletic acquisition and its link to defending and growing the New York Times subscription strategy.
