Peter Bale - Twitter madness, Guardian hack, etc etc and I am going to Substack
This could happen to any organisation but I suspect media firms are not fully aware of the risks they face. In a weird way, the pandemic forced us to deal with some of these issues so that The Guardian can send people home and keep working. Good on them.
Of course we need to think about this but have traditional media brands ever had access to young people? Do they need to intervene. Seriously, I just don't really know. Most attempts to reach kids look silly. Young people, in my view, choose the moment to start looking at serious media. Again, I may be totally wrong and I do recommend a look at The News Movement, which I wrote about here for INMA.
Stuff in Wellington has tried this and I do think it is the way to go: expose yourself to your readers. There's huge retail space: set up a media pop up (with appropriate security for your reporters) but seriously, be present.
I found this quite alarming and immediately enhanced my 2FA access. The real issue is that Twitter is becoming (on my account at least) almost unusable in that when you click on a link it no longer appears in a reasonable period and we are saturated with crypto and anti-vax people.
I hosted a recent session on climate change reporting for INMA and it is a big issue. We are in the middle of this, it seems. We have to follow the science, explain where the gaps are, but also track what is changing in real time. It is beyond the period to give equal time to deniers I suspect.
I'm including this because I think it is the story we (me) have all been waiting for: a proper explanation and well-sourced analysis of why Xi has abandoned zero Covid. (I may be alone but I think we also need to be generous to China on this as it is a good time to re-engage.)
I read the first two paragraphs of this but you might be able to go further. There are important issues here.
A look back at a tumultuous year in international news.
You may not see it as this, but I'd like to think of this as a bonus. It is my year analysis for The Spinoff in New Zealand.
